Get your restaurant recommended by ChatGPT: the GEO checklist, in order

GEO — generative engine optimisation — is the groundwork that helps get your restaurant named when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for a recommendation. Here's the practical checklist, in the order to tackle it, plus how to test where you stand today.

Get your restaurant recommended by ChatGPT: the GEO checklist, in order

Some customers now skip typing “best Thai Richmond” into Google. They're asking ChatGPT or Perplexity the same question in plain English, and expecting one confident answer back. If your restaurant isn't part of that answer, you don't get a second chance at that booking tonight.

You can't buy your way into that answer, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something you don't need. What you can do is make sure the basic facts about your restaurant are accurate, consistent, and easy for a machine to read. That's the whole job — here's the order to do it in.

GEO, AEO — same job, new name

You might have seen this called AEO — answer engine optimisation — elsewhere on our site. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the same idea under a newer label, aimed specifically at tools like ChatGPT that write out a full answer instead of listing ten blue links. For a restaurant, the difference doesn't matter much; the work is identical.

We've broken down how SEO, AEO and GEO all fit together in our full explainer on the three — worth reading for the full picture. The good news for restaurants specifically: most of what follows is stuff you can do yourself, without hiring anyone.

Start with your Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile — the free listing with your hours, photos, and map pin — is where a lot of your restaurant's basic facts live online. If yours is half-filled-in, out of date, or missing a menu, fix that before anything else on this list.

A complete profile means correct opening hours (including public holidays), the right cuisine category, a linked menu, and photos taken within the last year. We can build this groundwork into a restaurant website, as part of getting a site live properly.

Reviews: the trust signal AI actually reads

Star rating and review volume do double duty. They shape which restaurant a human clicks on, and they're public information an AI tool can see. Google's help page says “More reviews and positive ratings can help your business’s local ranking.” Source: Google Business Profile Help, read 29 September 2026.

Volume builds one guest at a time, not in a weekend.

If volume is your gap, start with our guide to getting more Google reviews, and make it easier on customers with our free review link generator — a direct link that skips the “searching for your business” step entirely.

Nobody can promise you'll be the restaurant ChatGPT recommends. You can make sure it has the right facts to recommend you with.

Get your NAP consistent everywhere

NAP stands for name, address, phone — the three facts about your business that should read identically everywhere they appear: your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, TripAdvisor, delivery apps. AI tools can draw on several of these sources, so it's worth making them match. An old address, a disconnected number, or “The Fig Tree Café” on one platform and “Fig Tree Cafe” on another reads as a weaker signal, not a charming quirk.

Add schema markup so AI can read your menu and hours

Schema markup is a small block of code added to your website that labels information in a format machines understand — “this is the opening hours”, “this is the menu”, “this is a review” — instead of making an AI guess from a paragraph of text. It doesn't change what a customer sees on the page. It's a translation layer sitting underneath it.

This is the kind of concrete, checkable groundwork GEO actually involves for a restaurant, alongside your Google Business Profile, your review system, and NAP consistency. None of it is glamorous. All of it is the difference between an AI model having something solid to work with, and having to guess.

Write your site content the way AI actually queries it

Write pages that read like an answer: a clear question as the heading, a direct response in the first sentence, no scene-setting before the point. Structure your FAQ page, menu descriptions, and About copy the same way you'd answer someone on the phone — plainly, and up front.

How to self-test: ask ChatGPT yourself

You don't need special tools to check where you stand today. Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask something like “best [your cuisine] restaurant in [your suburb]” or “where should I eat near [a nearby landmark] tonight” — the same question a real customer would type.

See if you're named. If you're not, that's a baseline, not a failure — work through the list above, then ask again in a month and compare. Nobody, including us, can guarantee which way it moves, but at least you're checking something real instead of guessing.

Questions we get asked

Can I pay to get my restaurant recommended by ChatGPT?

No — there's no ad placement or paid slot inside ChatGPT or Perplexity's answers. What you can influence is the quality and consistency of the information those tools pull from: your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and your website. Get those right and you improve your odds; nobody can guarantee the exact answer an AI model gives on any given day.

What's the difference between GEO, AEO and SEO?

SEO (search engine optimisation) is about ranking in traditional Google search results. AEO (answer engine optimisation) and GEO (generative engine optimisation) both describe the newer work of getting named inside an AI-generated answer rather than a list of links — GEO is just the term that's become more common for tools like ChatGPT specifically. For a restaurant, the practical steps overlap heavily with good local SEO.

Do I need a big website for this to work?

No. A small, accurate site with clear opening hours, a real menu, and correctly labelled information (schema markup) gives AI tools the facts they need. Size isn't one of them.

How long before I see results?

There's no fixed timeline, and no guarantee — AI recommendations aren't something any agency, including us, controls. Consistency across platforms takes an initial clean-up plus ongoing upkeep. Most of the checklist above is worth doing regardless of AI, because it also helps your normal Google ranking and your customers.

Does my Google Business Profile still matter if I already have a website?

Yes — if anything, it matters more. Your profile (hours, photos, menu, reviews) is often the first thing a customer sees in Google Search and Maps, so an out-of-date one undercuts even a well-built site.

Most of this checklist is groundwork you can do yourself without paying anyone. Automatically chasing reviews and keeping your profile current are still on our roadmap, not something you can buy today — see Whale Marketing in One for what's actually live right now: your marketing drafted in your voice, approved by you, with a record of what went out.
