How much does an AI consultant cost in Melbourne?

Search for an AI consultant in Melbourne and you'll find plenty of people offering to help.

You won't find many prices.

So here's what the published numbers say, what moves them, and how to work out which end of the range your business belongs at.

The short answer

Two Melbourne-facing consultancies publish their pricing, and they sit a long way apart.

According to Yes AI's consulting page, a focused engagement is $1,000 and a standard roadmap is $3,000.

According to Neomeric's 2026 Melbourne guide, an AI readiness assessment typically runs $5,000 to $15,000 over two to four weeks, with proof-of-concept work starting above that.

Both figures were on those pages when we read them on 30 September 2026. Prices change, so check the source before you budget.

That spread isn't one firm being cheap and the other expensive. They're pricing different jobs for different-sized businesses.

How much do business consultants charge in Australia?

If you searched for business consultant charges, start with the general figures. The AI part comes after.

According to Expert360's guide to hiring management consultants, independent management consultants in Australia typically charge A$1,000 to A$2,200 a day, depending on seniority and how complex the problem is. Expert360 runs a consultant marketplace and calls those rates indicative.

For hourly rates, ScaleSuite's April 2026 guide to advisory costs puts boutique advisory firms at $150 to $350 an hour.

We read both pages on 10 October 2026. Neither is a government survey, and neither says whether GST is included, so ask before you compare quotes.

However the number is set, it usually arrives in one of three shapes:

  • By the hour or the day. You pay for time. It suits work where the problem isn't clear yet, but you won't know the total until it's done.
  • A fixed price. One number for an agreed scope. It works when everyone can describe the result before work starts.
  • By the project or on retainer. A price per stage, or a monthly fee for advice as you need it.

AI consultants use the same three shapes. The two AI consultancies quoted at the top of this article price per engagement, which is the fixed-price kind.

What changes the number

How big the business is. An assessment across five departments costs more than one owner describing one job.

What you walk away with. A strategy document, a roadmap, a working prototype and a finished workflow are four different things. Ask which one the quote covers.

Whether anything gets built. Advice is one price. Advice plus a build is another. Ask whether the quote stops at the recommendation.

Who does the work. A named consultant who sits with you costs differently to a team with an account manager in between.

A useful floor when you price your own time: the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 an hour from 1 July 2026. An owner's hour is worth more than that. Source: Fair Work Ombudsman.

If you're a sole trader or a team of five

Most of what's published is written for companies with departments.

If it's you, a ute and a part-time bookkeeper, a multi-week readiness assessment is the wrong tool. You don't have five workflows to prioritise. You have one job that eats your Monday.

That's the gap Whale Digital Consulting works in: sole traders and small teams, in English or Chinese.

Here's how our pricing works, in full:

  • The first consultation is free. 15 to 30 minutes, in Melbourne or online.
  • The diagnosis day is a fixed A$399. It's the only number you commit to before you've seen us work.
  • Anything we build after that is quoted per job, and you know the number before work starts.

A diagnosis day ends in one of four places: AI training on your own job, one workflow mapped and built and checked, a custom system, or a straight recommendation not to automate that job at all.

The fourth one is a real outcome. Some jobs aren't worth it.

You can read how the day runs on our AI consulting page.

What the A$399 diagnosis day actually is

We work forward-deployed: we sit with one job while you keep working, and ask as it happens. You bring 60 to 90 minutes of your time.

You leave with a map of the job and three places AI could help, ranked. If you want the top one built, the quote is one page and fixed, within 48 hours. You can also stop there and keep the map.

Example scenario, not a client result: a three-person accounting practice loses the first week of each month to requesting client documents. The map shows where the chasing repeats. That's candidate one.

Five questions to ask any AI consultant before you pay

  1. What do I have in my hands at the end: a document, or something running?
  2. Is the price fixed, or an estimate?
  3. Who does the work, and will I talk to them?
  4. Which tools will this need, and do I already pay for them?
  5. Who checks the output before it reaches a customer?

If the answer to the last one is "nobody", keep looking.

Common questions about AI consultant costs

How much does an AI consultant charge per hour in Melbourne?

We couldn't find a Melbourne consultancy that publishes an hourly rate. The ones that publish prices quote per engagement. Ours is per engagement too: a fixed A$399 diagnosis day, then a quote per job.

Is an AI consultant worth it for a business with no staff?

Only if there's one repeat job costing you real time, and you can describe it start to finish. If you can't name the job yet, start with the free call, not a paid engagement.

What's the difference between an AI consultant and an AI automation agency?

A consultant tells you what to do. An agency builds it. Some firms do both, so ask which part the quote covers.

Do I need to buy new software first?

Usually not. A sensible first step uses the tools you already pay for. Be wary of any plan that opens with a new subscription.

Can the work be done in Chinese?

With us, yes. Same consultant, same workflow map, English or Chinese.

How much should a business consultant charge?

It depends on seniority and how well the job is defined. Expert360 puts independent management consultants in Australia at A$1,000 to A$2,200 a day. If the scope is clear, asking for a fixed price usually makes the total easier to budget.

What are the typical consulting rates in Australia?

Published guides put independent management consultants at about A$1,000 to A$2,200 a day (Expert360) and boutique advisory firms at $150 to $350 an hour (ScaleSuite, April 2026). Both are indicative, so check whether a quote includes GST.

What exactly does a business consultant do?

Jobs and Skills Australia describes management consultants, the occupation business consultants fall under, as people who help organisations become more efficient and solve organisational problems. In practice that means studying how the work runs now, recommending changes, and sometimes helping put them in place.

How do you calculate a consultancy fee?

Estimate the time each stage will take, multiply it by a day or hourly rate, and add costs such as travel. Then decide whether to quote it as time or as one fixed price. If you're new to consulting and setting your own rate, Square's guide to consulting fees suggests dividing your former salary by 52 weeks, then by 38 hours, and then checking what competitors charge.

Start with the one job. Price the rest later.
